I don't think I answered this yet?
But anyway, no, I don't really use any kind of model for shading.
Just anything that would be shaded on the "real thing".
Or if I just think that something may look cool, like putting dark shading along the eyes or something?
I suppose that most of it is just a guess. Sometimes shading looks good, and sometimes it blows.
